The Lost River Range contains seven of the state’s ten twelve thousand foot peaks and is one of the most remote, rugged and difficult ranges in Idaho to access.  Like the Lemhi Mountains, the range is an active fault block formation that in the fall of 1983 rose an additional six feet after a magnitude 7.3 earth quack.  Because of its solitude and unprecedented vistas, the United States Forest Service has recommended 119,864 acres for wilderness designation.  Like their counterparts to the east, the Lost Rivers are, in general, an arid range, however their tremendous heights, which on average tower over 6,000.00 feet above the valley below, do harbor many lush and blossoming regions.  Recreational opportunities include hiking, climbing, ski mountaineering, fishing and mountain biking.  Few trails exist in the Lost Rivers, and even fewer roads for access.  Getting around can be difficult, the use of a mountain bike for transportation may be necessary on occasion, however most rewarding once the effort is made.
